WHO WE ARE
The Western Area Community Health Council's role is primarily as a liason between Palliser Health
Authority and the citizens of the Western Area (for a map of the Authority, click here). Our duties are numerous and
serve both the citizens of this area and Palliser. We serve the citizens by advising on gaps in the community's health services, providing Palliser with input regardnig the concerns and needs of
the community and trying to coordinate community efforts towards health. We also serve Palliser by acting on certain issues that they request of
us. The council has been in operation since the summer of 1996, and since then we have accomplished a great deal, such as:
Encouraged Palliser to find a surgeon for the Brooks area and to submit an article to the local papers, outlining what Palliser is doing to get a surgeon.
Addressed the issue of why the transfer of Mental Health Services to Health Authorities has been delayed.
At the request of the Kinettes we have encouraged the Newbrook and Playfair lodges to hire a recreational therapist for the seniors in both
Brooks and Bassano.
Brought to the attention of the Town of Brooks the unsafe nature of some crosswalks throughout Brooks. This led to a review of the
safety of all crosswalks in the town.
Encouraged Palliser to provide the local papers with a monthly summary of health statistics in the Palliser region.
Encouraged the Town of Brooks to write to the provincial government on the issue of bike helmet legislation.
These are just a few examples of the things we have accomplished thus far and what we hope to accomplish in the future. However, in order to do so
we need more feedback from the public and people who are interested in joining our council. This website addresses those needs, and so we
invite you to tour the rest of it.
