THE LAKE NEWELL REGION

Welcome to the Newell Region! The Region contains 2,500 square miles or 1.5 million acres. The land base includes a balance of irrigated and dryland farming and some 600,000 acres of native and improved rangelands for grazing purposes. In excess of 270,000 acres of land is irrigated.

Climatically, the Region is one of the most envied regions in Canada. It boasts the most hours of sunshine in the nation, and is known for its long growing season and mild winters.

The Lake Newell Region is strategically located in the Calgary/Lethbridge/Medicine Hat triangle. The Trans-Canada Highway bisects the area in an east/west direction and Highway #36 in a north/south direction. The CPR main line and a number of spur lines ensure quality rail transportation. Services in the Region include a high voltage power service corridor, bulk natural gas suppliers, surface irrigation and an abundance of reasonably priced serviced and unserviced industrial land.

Brooks, the largest community with a population of 9,500 residents, is situated in the centre of the Region. The Town contains a highly rated school system, Medicine Hat College - Brooks Campus, well developed recreational services and quality professional services including medical facilities.

Existing industries include a diverse agriculture base involving beef, grain, forage, vegetable and specialty crop production, a growing agri-business sector, one of Canada's largest beef processing plants, regional offices for oil and gas companies and a substantial oil and gas service sector.

The Region is also home to a number of technology centres, including the Alberta Special Crops and Horticulture Research Centre, Brooks Diagnostic Centre and Lakeside Research.

Tourists are attracted to the Region to enjoy Lake Newell and other irrigated reservoirs, sport fishing, bird watching, Dinosaur Provincial Park, Bassano Dam and the Aqueduct.

Complementing the natural resources and industry are the Region's people. The Lake Newell Region is widely recognized for its entrepreneurial spirit, technology-oriented labour force and genuinely friendly people. It is also an area with a reputation for supporting and investing in local businesses.

We are confident that we have the right amount of everything to meet your business and community needs. We are a fast growing community, progressive and open to new ideas.

We would be delighted to help in any way we can. Please contact us if you require additional information.
