Fly Fishing ReportsThe past 10 days have been interesting to say the least, when the sun comes out, high pressure moves in and it warms up fishing can be something just short of spectacular. Unfortunately the weather changes so rapidly that the fishing from day to day can be totally unpredictable, this is very true for pike on a fly rod. Most of the little lakes can one day produce fish in range of 24 - 32" and lots of em, only the next day one would say the lake is barren. No lake seems to be much better than the next, however the favorite color for flies seems to be predominately yellow in about a 6" length. Am going to try the fishing myself this afternoon as temperature climbs, right now the wind is mild but out of the North-East and a bit cold so have to dress warmly.
For trout I personally recommend Blood Indian at least last Tuesday.
One of the few perfect days, bright sun shine, winds very light from every
compass direction possible and water visibility of about 5 feet.
Using a number two wet line and one FTO nymph with a slow retrieve a friend
and I manage catch and release over 50 fish in an 8 hour period.
Most of fish were in the 11-12 inch range but there were a few honest 16"
fish and a couple in the 18" range. I did stomach pump one fish to find
it full of 1/2" midge pupa. If the one fly had not worked so well,
think that anyone trying a black and white midge pupa would have hammered
the fish even better. Only comment I have is to remember to retie
your fly after a number of fish, forgot my own advice and finally after
about 6 hours broke off hook in a good size fish right at the knot.
Got expensive, had to tie on a second fly for the day.
Local report on Fishing dated May 7 by Ken
Ice has been off the local lakes for about a month, but the run off
has been large this year as a result the lakes were off color. Blood
Indian and one of the local pike lakes were so unclear that my white float
tube fins disappeared. Now that is dark water, but the lakes were
in desperate need of water and they have filled nicely. Fishing can
only get better. The local stocked aqueduct pond was producing small
trout and perch on small black gold ribbed hares ear flies. Water
has cleared and the pike were just starting to get interested with a 37"
one out of Lake Newell about a week ago and another 4 beauties from a local
lake in about an hour's fishing a week ago today. Guess what ?
The foot and a half of snow with rain has slowed things to a stop.
Fishing is going to be excellent, all that is needed is some warm weather
and it looks like this weekend with be the first warming we have seen in
the better part of 10 days. Am going to try and get out even if I
have to be really nice to my wife so I can escape for a little on Mothers
Day.
Until next report - advice is simple - GO FISHING
- YOU CAN'T CATCH EM UNLESS YOU DO SO !
