Palliser's Country is one of the largest continuous blocks of native grassland in Canada. As a result, it is a stronghold for many species that have declined in other parts of the prairie provinces. Sometimes our residents take this abundant wildlife for granted, but careful management will be needed to ensure these species remain here.

The degree of threat is not easy to define. Some species that are rare in one region may still be quite common in other jurisdictions. This can lead to the international, federal and the various provincial ratings being different. Several species of mammal have been completely extirpated as wildlife from the grassland region, but still can be found in other areas. Only one species of prairie wildlife - a grasshopper - has become completely extinct in historic times.
