Great Places to Go Hiking in the Grasslands
Hiking across grasslands means you don't have to be confined to trails. However, you do need to have permission, so, unless you are in a park or other area designated for public access, make sure you contact the landowner.
Nearly all parks and recreation areas have places to hike. I have listed a few sites that may not get as much promotion, but are among my favourite places. These include:
- Red Rock Coulee near Medicine Hat, Alberta - From Medicine Hat, go 25 km west on Hwy 3, then 20 km south on Hwy 887.
- Cypress Hills on the Alberta - Saskatchewan border
Cypress Hills has beautiful trails in fescue grassland and spruce forest.
- Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park has grassland open for hiking. Just wade the river, and head toward the Sweetgrass Hills! A unique feature of Humphrey's Creek is the slot canyon. After a few metres, the narrow crevice widens out into a typical gentle coulee. A map of the whole park is available.
- Pinhorn Grazing Reserve along the Milk River canyon in southern Alberta
