Old Man On His Back is more than excellent grassland; it is a shining example of how thoughtful ranchers and a conservation organization can work together for mutual benefit.
The financial arrangement, part purchase and part charitable donation, allowed the land to stay intact, under the ownership of the Nature Conservancy and the Province of Saskatchewan. The Butalas continued to ranch the land during a transition period.
Some portions of the land that have been disturbed are being restored with the assistance of the Saskatchewan Native Plant Council. Fifty young bison were reintroduced to other parts of the land in 2004.
The site has received considerable media coverage.
Nature Saskatchewan's Spring Meet was held in Eastend in June 2005, and featured a tour of Old Man On His Back. Peter and Sharon Butala attended, and participants viewed the bison roaming the grassland.
Peter and Sharon Butala wanted to retire, but maintaining the grassland that they had cared for was important. The Nature Conservancy recognized the exceptional quality of the vegetation.
