1.
All
anglers must possess (where required by law) a valid Alberta fishing license.
All anglers must comply with all Alberta fishing regulations. Proof of age is required if a person is at
the age that they do not need an Alberta sport fishing license.
2.
All
contestants must purchase a derby license and on the morning of the derby a
registration number will be given. All
participants must be present for pre-registration.
3.
Prize
money will be based on a percentage of all entry fee money.
4.
Fishing
for this event will take place in Lake Newell only; any fish caught outside
Lake Newell will be disqualified.
5.
Prizes
will be based on total weight of your limit (3) of the target species (Northern
Pike).
6.
We
are promoting a catch and release derby, in doing this if a fish is considered
to be able to be released on the weigh-in form it will be noted that the fish
was released and thru the derby that weight will be changed with a larger
releasable fish weight. However, a fish that is brought in dead and not releasable,
that fish’s weight will be taken but not exchanged with any other weight. That contestant will be noted to have one
dead fish in their possession and their limit is now 2 remaining. As long as releasable fish are turned in
substitution of weights will be allowed.
If three dead fish are turned in then that is that contestant’s total
and final weight of the derby.
7.
All
fish will be subject to the “15 minutes rule”: after being measured by an
official, a fish will have 15 minutes to maintain equilibrium on its own
power. Once the fish is in the hands of
an official, no second chances or reworking of fish by a competitor will be
allowed. If a fish cannot maintain
equilibrium in 15 minutes or less, it will be treated as a dead fish and that
weight will not be substituted for another fish.
8.
All
dead fish are the property of the contestant.
9.
No
fishing within 100 yards in any direction of the weigh stations.
10.
All
fish must be whole, fresh, and never been frozen. No gaffed, snagged, fizzed, or foul hooked fish will be accepted
for entry. Plus that contestant will be
disqualified from the derby and all fish that were offered by that contestant
will also be disallowed.
11.
Derby
registration forms and licenses are non transferable. They must be presented on each occasion a fish is offered, and
they may not be honored or replaced if lost.
12.
Derby
licenses are non refundable.
13.
The
decision of the judges if final. In the
event of a tie, the first fish weighed in will be declared the winner.
14.
No
pre-fishing on the Friday previous to the start of the derby.
15.
All
fish will be weighed by the derby officials at predetermined areas. All
measurements by the officials are FINAL.
16.
At
the predetermined areas, officials of the derby will be watching for teams of
fishermen/fisherwomen thus meaning that if more than one person is fishing off
one license a penalty will be assessed to the person turning in the fish that
is being desired to be weighed. The
penalty will be that half of the weight of the fish being weighed will be taken
off for every person in their presence that does not have a derby license. Unless it is a person under the age of 16
years old and that person is fishing under their parent or guardian’s derby
license or their own.
17.
If
you are fishing off shore or in a boat you may be approached by a derby
official holding a red flag in the air.
Please immediately stop you engine and allow officials to inspect
licenses.
18.
Contestants
must complete a weigh-in form furnished by the Elks Derby Committee at the
weigh-in stations.
19.
The
contestant is responsible for the accuracy of the information about his/her
entered fish as it is transcribed on the official weigh-in form. Once the contestant has affixed his/her
signature to the weigh-in form he/she relinquishes all rights to challenge the
accuracy of the data.
20.
Pre
registration will occur from 6:00 AM and the derby will start at 7:00 AM at the
sound of a horn. If a contestant has
not registered his/her fish will be disqualified until a registration number is
given, but however a registration will not be given until that fish is released
or clearly marked so that fish cannot be used for the purposes of the
derby. The pre registration will also
be used as a quick meeting to ensure that everybody understands the rules and
regulations. Ends at 6 PM. Prizes to be awarded at the Elks Lounge at 8
PM. Must be present to claim all
prizes. This includes door prizes.
21.
At

at any given time will be immediately disqualified from the derby.
27.
In
the case the anglers are trying to keep releasable fish a proper live well is
required, in general we hope to see live wells that keep a constant supply of
oxygen to the fish. (No live well worse
than a salmon live well.) This excludes
buckets, coolers and tubs.
28.
Please
no stringed fish.
29.
In
the event the Elks officials disqualify a contestant, any and all the fish,

30.
Anglers
participating in all Elks derbies are expected to conduct themselves in a
sportsman like manner and abide by the derby rules and regulations set
forth. It is a privilege, not a
right. USE RESPECT!
31.
We
ask that all fish caught, and of which are of a size to consider “measurable”
(as well as all fish) are handled with care.
32.
It
is the responsibility of the prizewinner to collect his/her prize(s). Prizes, or thereof, not claimed by June 21,
2002 will become property of the Elks Lodge #77.
33.
Promoters
and organizations hosting/assisting in the derby operation, their agencies, and
agents are not responsible for death, damage, injury, liability, theft, fire or
loss to any entrants or their families and friends. Each entrant, upon signing an entry form, will in effect be
signing a waiver form. This includes
boats, recreational vehicles, canoes, and/or flotation devices.

SPIRIT OF THE RULE
All rules have loopholes. It is
the intention of the Elks to provide an honest, sportsmanlike derby. In the interest of good sportsmanship,
contestants are reminded that the ‘spirit of the rule’ will prevail and all
judgements by the officials are final.
All questions or problems concerning the rules of this derby are to be
referred to the derby committee chairperson.
Any contestant has the right to make a protest against another
contestant. A protest form is available from the derby officials and should be
filled out and presented to the chairman within one hour of the close of the
fishing derby. A one hundred ($100.00)
dollar protest fee will be required to accompany any formal protest. The fee is to be returned if the protest is
found to be valid by the protest committee. If invalid, the fee will not be
returned.
The Elks Lodge #77 is a nonprofit organization with the extraordinary
mission giving back to the community.
The derby is just one of the ways we raise money to help us accomplish
that mission, but we also need help from individual supporters, like you. Would you consider becoming an Elks member?
