Is this the same as Satellite
Downloads?
No. This is a Two-way high-speed link. Your signal originates at a high
speed fibre link in Calgary and is then transmitted by radio waves thru a
series of towers to your local tower. It is then picked up by the antenna at
your house and is then fed through a cable into a special modem inside your
house. Your computer is then plugged into this modem. Your signal out to the
internet follows the same path back at the same speed.
If it's wireless, can I drive around
the county while using a laptop computer?
No. This is a Point-To-Point service. Your account ends at your house and
can't be used in any other area.
Does it use my phone lines?
No. Your phone line is free to use at all times.
How does Wireless compare to my
Dial-up account?
High-speed wireless is a 24 hour a day service that is active whenever your
computer is turned on. You no longer need to log into or out of your account
and your charges are not dependent on your actual time on line. The speeds
will be 10 to 12 times faster than your current dial-up connection. The
trouble some people have with large e-mails plugging there mail box and
timing out will no longer be a problem with High-speed Wireless. You will be
able to send and receive pictures with your relatives in the city without a
worry.
Why is there an initial cost of
$400.00 ?
The total cost of the equipment and installation for a residential service
is approximately $1100.00 . This includes the antenna that will attach to
your house, the subscriber radio (high-speed modem) that will sit in your
house, the cabling between the two and the cost of the installation. The EID
is subsidizing this cost so that the end user only has to pay $400 of it.
Please note that this is a standard install cost. In some cases we will not
be able to reach a house with just the standard equipment. Any additional
equipment needed, such as higher masts for the antenna, may have an extra
cost. A site survey is done on all installations before any work is started
to ascertain what will be necessary at each location.
Can I do the install myself?
Unfortunately no. Because of the type of radio equipment being used, trained
installers do need to be used.
Do I need any special kind of
computer equipment?
You will need at least a Pentium 133 computer running Windows
98/NT/2000/ME/XP, 32 Mb of Ram, 50 MB of available hard drive space, a CD
Rom Drive and a 10/100 Network card installed. It should be remembered that
these are the minimum requirements and as such will not provide your best
internet experience. The EIDNet also strongly recommends the use of an
up-to-date virus scanner as well as the use of a hardware or software
firewall. If you want to have more than one computer connected in your house
you will also need a router. Your local computer store can help with
recommendations for any upgrades that you may need. You can also have your
machine checked-out during the site survey.
Can anyone outside my house monitor
my activity if it is transmitted wirelessly?
Because of the built in cryptology and spread spectrum format of wireless
internet transmission, it is actually more secure than using your phone
lines.
